It's Never Too Early to Jump Into Spring

Winter got you down? Do you find yourself dreaming of flowers and laying in the grass while the warm sun beats down on you? If you do, then you (like many of us) have hit the winter blues. Its that awkward time of the year where spring is close enough to want it but far enough away that you can't quite feel it. To help with this we prescribe a healthy dose of color to brighten your pre-spring purgatory.

3.1 Phillip Lim

Take those neutrals you have been rocking all winter and start to introduce some pastels or splashes of solids to get that spring feel without freezing in the winter cold.

Avoid the Grey

Two weekends ago on February 4th, TRAX staff member Madeline Riebe ventured to the annual Avoid the Grey fashion show hosted by Uptown’s favorite boutique for young, edgy, and eclectic styles: Cliché.

While the surrounding neighborhood seemed quiet and drab, entering the grand warehouse venue was like walking into a hip, undercover New York club. Upbeat techno music enhanced by a pop harp player boomed throughout the building as an artistic medley of psychedelic video clips projected on the wall. Fashionistas in high heels, LBDs, mink shawls, thick-rimmed glasses, and red lips were everywhere, clutching onto fancy drinks and mingling with Minneapolis’ happening in-crowd while getting their chance in the spotlight as professional photographers shot away.

However, no traditional runway or designated seating was to be found. Instead, five giant white boxes were dispersed throughout the room, each with several “peep holes” cut out for spectators to peer into which provided for an usual, interactive experience. Inside the boxes housed the creative visions of amazing local designers. Looking into them was like entering a fantasy world of fashion complete with complex scenery and dramatic lighting to evoke a personal message.

Rather than more marketable garments, the models were dressed in incredible, bizarre, artistic and extravagant costumes and makeup and had to act out their role in the scene. From a horned, woodland goddess to a glam Amazon woman in 12-inch yellow lace heels, each box awakened a unique perspective. Could this creative approach to apparel design be the new trend in fashion shows?

Avoid the Grey definitely pushed fashion “outside (or inside, rather) the box” and was a must-see event of the year.

Sad you missed out? Don’t worry, with Minneapolis/St. Paul fashion week approaching, here’s a list of other jaw-dropping shows to attend:

Dip-Dye Hair

Looking for a change from your boring, same-old hairstyle? Turn up the drama by bleaching the ends of your hair and then adding striking hues.  This trend has started in 2011 and is extending into 2012 with stars like Kate Bosworth, Rihanna, and Carrie Underwood strutting down the red carpet with streaks, washes of pastels, bright dyes, and dip-dye looks.

Goodbye to a Legend

On February 11, 2012, music lost one of its greatest stars. Whitney Houston died at age 48 in her hotel Beverly Hills, just one day before the Grammys.

She is famous for her powerful and majestic voice and her songs; such as “I Will Always Love You” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”.

Her impact on music will continue long after her time. While the world has lost a star, the sky has gained one. R.I.P. Whitney.

Denim Double Take

[Caution readers: Coming up is a trend that could go horribly awry. Please handle with care and good fashion sense.]

This spring retailers are bring back the 70s and 90s and switching things up by putting denim on the top half of the body rather than your bottom [half]. Jean jackets and denim inspired cotton shirts and dresses are making their way back onto the shelves and racks and into our closets this season. But this TRAX writer is a little hesitant to get too excited because I dread seeing a jean jacket paired with jean pants. ICK. But if one can style it right, this trend can turn into a cute fashion twist. To demonstrate I created two outfits using this denim double take trend.

First outfit is a denim inspired cotton shirt dress that, while it’s still a little chilly out, can be paired with legging and boots and accessorized with a scarf or necklace or a cute pair of flats in the warmer months for a light, casual day look.

My next outfit has a little more of a twist. I took a denim mini dress and paired it with a bright floral skirt for a fun spring to summer look!

Remember, stay away from denim on denim, especially if they are the same shade. No one wants to look like a cowboy at junior prom in a denim tuxedo.
